Interview

Great news! They’re considering your application. The next step: the famous job interview.

You only get one chance to make a good impression. So prepare yourself and give it your all!

Before the interview: the phone interview

If you have to do a phone interview before doing one in person, it’s the first 45 seconds that count.

The call could come at any time, so always be prepared!

Before the interview: preparing for questions

Be prepared to answer the different questions you could be asked.

These questions typically relate to your experience, past jobs, strengths and weaknesses. You’ll no doubt be asked why you left your last job and why you are the best person for the job.

The interview: the first moments
Here are the basic rules for the beginning of the interview...
  1. Come alone
  2. Arrive about 15 minutes early
  3. Plan your schedule accordingly; a thorough interview can last up to 90 minutes
  4. Dress in a neutral, professional manner, for the job you want
  5. Shake hands firmly with the person conducting the interview, obviously without crushing their hand
  6. Don’t sit down until invited to do so
  7. If the interview is in French, use the "vous" form of address, unless the person gives you permission to use the "tu" form of address
During the interview
During the interview, remember the following:
  1. Sit up straight
  2. Look the interviewer in the eye
  3. Be enthusiastic and confident, but calm
  4. Smile!
  5. Take time to think before answering
  6. Don’t just answer with a “yes” or “no”; develop your answers, but avoid drawing them out unnecessarily
  7. Tell the truth
  8. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, but make sure they’re relevant
After the interview
Thank the interviewer for seeing you and shake his or her hand.
Then follow up:
  • You can send a letter or an email to the interviewers to thank them for taking the time to meet with you.
  • Call the person you met to follow up. If you are not hired, ask why. This will help you prepare better for your next interview!

Prepare, take a deep breath, and answer questions with calm conviction
